Le spugne marine sono animali appartenenti al gruppo dei Poriferi (Phylum Porifera) nome che deriva dal latino porus e ferre e che significa “portatori di pori”. Non possiedono dei veri tessuti ma piuttosto singole cellule specializzate nello svolgimento di determinate funzioni come ad esempio la costruzione degli elementi dello scheletro, la nutrizione e la riproduzione. Si nutrono filtrando l'acqua e trattenendo l'alimento costituito principalmente da microalghe, batteri e protozoi trasportati al loro interno da una fitta rete di canali. In pratica è un filtratore naturale dei nostri mari. Vive da pochi metri a profondità abissali e le loro forme variano.
