Polygonia c-album (Linné, 1758) - Famiglia Nymphalidae - Sottofamiglia Nymphalinae - Apertura alare: Da 4,2 a 5,2 cm. - Distribuzione in Italia: Presente in tutte le regioni isole comprese, ad eccezione della Puglia. - Habitat: Prati, ampie radure e margini dei boschi, dal livello del mare sino a 1800 m. - Periodo di volo: Polivoltina con sfarfallamenti da maggio a luglio e in agosto. Gli adulti della seconda generazione svernano rimanendo in vita sino alla primavera successiva, per cui è possibile osservare esemplari in volo nelle giornate miti anche in pieno inverno. - Pianta alimentare dei bruchi: Varie piante dei generi Urtica, Salix, Ribes, Humulus, Coylus, Parietaria, ecc... - Dimorfismo sessuale: Femmina simile al maschio, ma leggermente più grande. - Variazioni: Gli esemplari della seconda generazione risultano più scuri nella tonalità del fulvo, nei disegni premarginali delle ali posteriori e su tutto il rovescio delle ali. Alcuni individui svernanti presentano il rovescio delle ali di colore scuro quasi uniforme: forma carbonaria. - Specie simili: Polygonia egea che presenta sul diritto delle ali una colorazione più chiara e i disegni neri meno estesi. Il disegno della pagina inferiore è diverso, mostra una serie di strie sottili, abbastanza parallele e con un andamento dall'avanti all'indietro. La macchia bianca dell'ala posteriore è esile e angolata a L, mentre in P. c-album ha la classica forma a C che, in alcuni casi, può anche essere chiusa da una sottile linea bianca tanto da formare una D.
