Castel del Monte. Una corona di pietra poggiata su una collina a 540 metri sul livello del mare, a dominare l'altopiano delle Murge occidentali in Puglia. È Castel del Monte, fortezza fatta costruire da Federico II intorno al 1240. Considerato universalmente un geniale esempio di architettura medievale, il castello unisce elementi stilistici diversi, dal taglio romanico dei leoni dell'ingresso alla cornice gotica delle torri, dall'arte classica dei fregi interni alla struttura difensiva dell'architettura fino alle delicate raffinatezze islamiche dei suoi mosaici. La fortezza è stata concepita secondo un estremo rigore geometrico e matematico. La pianta è ottagonale e il numero otto ricorre in maniera quasi ossessiva: otto sono le sale del piano terra e del primo piano e otto le imponenti torri, ovviamente a pianta ottagonale, disposte su ognuno degli otto spigoli. Si ritiene che nel cortile interno fosse presente una vasca anch'essa ottagonale. La posizione del castello è studiata in modo tale da creare particolari effetti di luci e ombre in determinati periodi dell'anno, come nei giorni del solstizio e dell'equinozio. Tutto, insomma, sembra fatto apposta per suggerire simbolismi che appassionano da secoli gli studiosi, lasciando ai visitatori una sensazione di piacevole enigma. All rights reserved.
