Il suo nome deriva dal latino passio che significa passione e flos che significa fiore, quindi Fiore della passione o passiflora. Tale nome fu attribuito dal gesuita Emmanuel de Villegas nel 1610 grazie alla somiglianza di alcune parti della pianta con i simboli religiosi della passione di Cristo: la corona di filamenti colorati che circonda l'ovario rappresentava la corona di spine, mentre i cinque stami sono espressione delle cinque ferite di Gesù; i tre stigmi rappresentano invece i tre chiodi alle mani e ai piedi, i cinque petali gli sepali indicano gli apostoli fedeli rimasti, l'androginoforo rappresenta la colonna della flagellazione, i viticci sono i flagelli. Con l'occasione auguro una Felice e Santa Pasqua a tutti gli amici di Juza.
