Questa specie di tulipani è di origine ignota; oltre ad essere presente in coltivazione in molte regioni d'Italia, spesso si trova anche in uno stato subspontaneo, proprio come accade a Blufi. In provincia di Palermo Su di un'altura del versante meridionale delle Madonie è situato Blufi, un piccolo centro che nel suo territorio nasconde una piccola oasi fiammeggiante. È la Sicilia magica che non ti aspetti! Un fazzoletto di terra antistante il Santuario della Madonna dell'Olio, che a partire dal mese di marzo ogni anno genera dei bellissimi tulipani rossi. La particolarità di questa zona: è che i tulipani crescono in maniera spontanea su di un campo fatto di grano, olivi e mandorli il cui terreno è sottoposto a processi di aratura. I fiammeggianti tulipani sembrano infatti non risentire degli interventi umani, poiché i bulbi si trovano a circa 50 cm di profondità. Qui il colore rosso dei tulipani di staglia sul verde tipico dei prati madoniti, regalando un colpo d'occhio davvero suggestivo. Secondo la leggenda una coppia di giovani sposi si recò al Santuario della Madonna dell'Olio per chiedere una grazia affinché potessero generare un figlio, ponendo sull'altare dei tulipani bianchi in omaggio alla Vergine; i candidi tulipani divennero rossi al cospetto delle loro preghiere. Dopo qualche mese la coppia era in dolce attesa e diede alla luce due gemelli. Grati alla Madonna per il miracolo compiuto, la famiglia si recò al Santuario in un giorno di febbraio a rendere grazie per la gioia ricevuta, ma il luogo era chiuso; voltandosi però furono catturati da una distesa fiammeggiante di bellissimi tulipani, che avevano riempito il campo antistante il sagrato. Blufi ha fatto di questa fioritura un'attrazione. Utile però la raccomandazione, a chi dovesse andare a visitarla, di non raccogliere o calpestare le splendide piantine, come purtroppo spesso accade.
