Metto questa didascalia per Giovanni e Davide che vogliono togliersi qualche curiosità su questa specie e, magari, potrà interessare altri. Le Marzaiole migrano in gruppi anche molto numerosi, e, in primavera le vediamo passare sul mare anche vicine alla costa in cerca di un punto di entrata a terra per riposarsi e rifocillarsi. Questa foto è del Marzo 2018 e stanno appunto entrando a terra. Vengono dalla zona sud sahariana, soprattutto dalla zona di inondazione del Niger e dal lago Ciad e sono dirette nelle zone di nidificazione dell'Europa centrale e orientale. qualche rara coppia nidificava anche in Piemonte, Friuli-Venezia Giulia e in provincia di Varese ma sono dati di 20-30 anni fa, chissà se qualcuna ce ne è ancora. La migrazione primaverile le vede portate dall'estro riproduttivo e sostano pochissimo e, anche in pieno volo sul mare ci sono corteggiamenti e scaramucce tra maschi che sono spettacolari, si distinguono infatti anche da molto lontano per questo volo ricco di evoluzioni anche in mezzo ad altre specie come il Codone e il Germano con le quali spesso si accompagnano. Il periodo va da fine Febbraio a tutto Aprile ma è nella seconda e terza decade del mese di Marzo che ne passano in maggior numero, in media è il giorno di S. Giuseppe quello più ricco di passaggi. In certe primavere succede però di non vederne per settimane, poi, grande emozione, nel giro di 2 -3 gg. ne passa un numero enorme, poi più nulla. Il ritorno delle stesse in Africa avviene su direttrici più a est dell'Italia tra fine Agosto e Ottobre, si chiama migrazione a arco, parecchie se ne vedono tuttavia anche sul nostro territorio tra fine Agosto e fine Ottobre, spesso inosservate però perché facilmente confuse con le Alzavole. Se vicine sono riconoscibili da queste per lo specchio alare verde oliva a differenza del verde brillante di quello delle Alzavole, ma da lontano è difficile distinguerle perché la forma del corpo è simile nelle due specie, le Marzaiole sono solo leggermente più slanciate, i Francesi le chiamano entrambe Sarcelle: Sarcelle d'été la Marzaiola e Sarcelle d'Hiver l'Alzavola. Per restare a casa nostra in Lombardia le chiamano Garganell entrambe. Fanno dei bei chilometri in continua eccitazione portate dall'estro riproduttivo.
