L'idea delle matite giganti, con la punta del classico pastello, è nata a Aldo Divano, in Laos osservando i bambini: «Quando sono stato nel sudest asiatico: ho visto dei bambini che trasformavano dei piccoli bastoncini di legno in matite, semplicemente colorandoli e facendogli una specie di punta. Tornando in Italia ho poi deciso di provare a farle in grande usando legno di castagno che grazie alla sua rusticità e le forme irregolari, contorte, nodose hanno reso le mie opere ancora più particolari e uniche una dall'altra». I pali li prende dai suoi boschi, ad Arquata Scrivia. Li taglia, poi vengono decorticati, levigati, puliti, lasciando i nodi, «che aggiungono autenticità», fa le punte con l'accetta, poi le dipinge, con tinte pastello; un lavoro lungo che fa nei ritagli di tempo.Oggi le sue opere sono tutte brevettate e le matite che realizza vanno dai 50 cm ai 3 metri, con un diametro dai 10 ai 20/25 cm.
