Lu, è un piccolo paese del Monferrato Casalese di poco più di 1.000 abitanti: vigne e vino sono le sue ricchezze. Ma la sua notorietà, almeno in Piemonte, è dovuta al fatto che, alla fine dell'Ottocento, molte madri di famiglia presero a cuore il desiderio di vedere uno dei loro figli diventare sacerdote o una delle loro figlie diventare suora. Iniziarono quindi a riunirsi tutti i martedì per l'adorazione del Santissimo Sacramento, sotto la guida del loro parroco, Monsignor Alessandro Canora, e a pregare per le vocazioni. Nessuno avrebbe mai pensato che il loro desiderio fosse esaudito. Infatti, da questo piccolo paese sono uscite ben 323 (!) vocazioni alla vita consacrata: 152 sacerdoti (e religiosi) e 171 religiose appartenenti a 41 diverse congregazioni. In alcune famiglie ci sono state qualche volta anche tre o quattro vocazioni. L'esempio più conosciuto è quello della famiglia Rinaldi. Il Signore chiamò sette figli di questa famiglia. Due figlie entrarono tra le suore salesiane e, mandate a Santo Domingo, furono delle coraggiose pioniere e missionarie. Tra i maschi, cinque diventarono sacerdoti salesiani. Il più conosciuto dei cinque fratelli, Filippo Rinaldi, fu il terzo successore di Don Bosco, beatificato da Giovanni Paolo II il 29 aprile 1990. In effetti, molti giovani entrarono tra i salesiani e non per caso Don Bosco, nella sua vita, si recò quattro volte a Lu.
