Schokland è un'ex isola dello Zuiderzee, il Mare del Sud, e viene considerata a livello mondiale come il simbolo per eccellenza della lotta dei Paesi Bassi contro l'acqua. Schokland è stata inglobata nella terraferma a seguito del prosciugamento del polder nord-occidentale. Si tratta di un luogo molto particolare, caratterizzato da una natura stupenda e da una ricca storia culturale; è una località sorprendente che possiede numerosi monumenti e interessanti rialzi artificiali. La presenza di oltre 160 siti archeologici dimostra il livello di sviluppo e la cultura degli abitanti di Schokland. Nel 1984 sono state rinvenute persino impronte di piedi umani risalenti a più di 4.000 anni fa, oggi esposte al Museo di Schokland. Per secoli Schokland è stata un'isola densamente popolata i cui abitanti vivevano di pesca e di commercio d'oltremare. Ma l'incessante battaglia contro le mareggiate e le inondazioni spinse gli abitanti di Schokland, a eccezione del guardiano del faro, ad abbandonare l'isola. Quando successivamente parti dell'ex Zuiderzee, l'attuale IJsselmeer, vennero prosciugate, Schokland perse anche la sua funzione segnaletica per la navigazione e diventò un'isola inglobata nel polder. Recandoti a Schokland potrai notare il fiero posizionamento dell'isola nel paesaggio del polder, a simboleggiare la lotta contro il mare. Visita i resti del faro, l'ex porto sulla punta settentrionale, le rovine della chiesa e il Museo di Schokland. La storia culturale dell'isola e dei suoi abitanti simboleggia la lotta incessante degli Olandesi contro l'acqua. È facile dunque comprendere perché Schokland è stato il primo monumento olandese ad essere inserito nella lista dei siti patrimonio dell'umanità dell'UNESCO. Sono stato due volte in questo luogo paradisiaco di Olanda e in entrambe ho percipito bellissime emozioni. Dove ho preso questa foto una volta c'era il mare e la piccola diga di legno vicino alla chiesa era l'estrema protezione alle intemperie del mare. Buona visione.
