Dal 1987 è un'area naturale protetta d'Abruzzo. Il parco prende il nome dal fiume Lavino, le cui acque sulfuree sono di un meraviglioso colore tra l'azzurro e il turchese. Il fiume Lavino nasce dal Vallone di Santo Spirito, la zona settentrionale del massiccio montuoso della Majella e, dopo aver passato Scafa, si va a gettare nelle acque del fiume Pescara. E' un complesso suggestivo, una tavolozza di colori grazie ai laghetti che sfumano da un bel colore azzurro al turchese per la presenza di particolari alghe e solfati disciolti con una vegetazione varia e ricca.
