Famiglia: Libellulidae - Specie: Sympetrum striolatum - Autore: (Charpentier, 1840) • Dimensioni: lunghezza 35-45 mm, apertura alare 50-60 mm. • Descrizione: il maschio è di color rosso-mattone, giallo quando immaturo, mentre la femmina è giallastra ma tende a scurirsi con l'età. La specie è riconoscibile per il torace bicolore, giallo e rosso nel maschio, con marcate suture nere. Il torace delle femmine è meno appariscente, marrone con due bande gialle contornate da linee nere. Gli occhi sono superiormente di color marrone-rossiccio, bruno-verdi nella porzione inferiore, le zampe nere con linee gialle lungo le tibie ed i femori, le ali hanno pterostigma rosso-brunastro e nelle posteriori è presente una piccola macchia basale gialla. Un carattere utile per l'identificazione è la faccia gialla o rossastra con il nero sulla fronte che non prosegue lungo gli occhi. • Distribuzione e habitat: diffusa in tutta Italia e isole. Specie pioniera, predilige ambienti con raccolte d'acqua ferma e poco profonda. Più comune in pianura ma si spinge fino ai 1800 metri di quota. • Periodo di volo: da giugno a novembre ma occasionalmente anche a dicembre-gennaio. Appena sfarfallati gli individui immaturi si allontanano dall'acqua e gli adulti si osservano a partire da settembre quando ritornano per la riproduzione.
