Sala delle Aquile La vasta sala ospita oggi ciò che rimane della Cavalcata, la serie di statue equestri lignee scolpite nel 1587 da un artista veneto per celebrare le virtù militari della stirpe Gonzaga. Le dieci statue in origine erano collocate nel Salone dei Cavalli, un vasto ambiente posto nel retro del palazzo, distrutto da un violento incendio agli inizi dell'Ottocento. Le fiamme distrussero completamente alcune statue e ne danneggiarono seriamente altre. Al centro centro della sala la statua del duca Vespasiano Gonzaga Colonna in armatura da parata ed il collare dell'ordine cavalleresco del Toson d'Oro. A lato il padre Luigi detto Rodomonte, il bisnonno Gian Francesco, primo signore del feudo di Sabbioneta e Ludovico, terzo capitano del popolo, appartenente alla linea principale dei Gonzaga di Mantova. in fondo alla sala sono posti i cinque busti che furono recuperati dalle statue danneggiate dall'incendio. Il perimetro della sala è interamente percorso da un fregio affrescato con grandi aquile che reggono festoni di fiori e frutta, mentre dal loro collo pendono blasoni con gli stemmi della famiglia Gonzaga. In epoca napoleonica gli stemmi furono cancellati e sostituiti da lettere capitali che compongono la scritta "VIVA LA REPVBBLICA". Da: Sabbioneta-Palazzo Ducale
