Il lago Pistono, nei pressi di Ivrea, è situato in una conca scavata dal ritiro di un ghiacciaio del Pleistocene che ha generato anche gli altri laghi della zona (Sirio, Nero, Campagna e San Michele). L'intero lago è circondato da un itinerario immerso nella natura, tra boschi e vigneti coi caratteristici topiùn. L'itinerario è percorribile a piedi, a cavallo o in bicicletta. Io l'ho fatto a piedi in poco più di un'ora. Sul lago incombe il castello medievale di Montalto Dora di incommensurabile bellezza, aperto al pubblico solo poche volte all'anno perché di proprietà privata. Il lago Sirio, non molto distante, raggiungibile facilmente da Ivrea, è una enorme piscina, con acque pulite e balneabili e con impianti natatori ben curati e di ottima qualità.
