La poiana beccogrosso (Rupornis magnirostris) è uno dei rapaci più diffusi del continente americano. Il suo areale va dal Messico settentrionale al sud dell'Argentina. La specie mostra notevoli variazioni entro il suo range di distribuzione, con 12 sottospecie attualmente riconosciute, molto simili l'una all'altra, di dimensioni piuttosto piccole (31-41 cm). Il piumaggio varia considerabilmente fra le sottospecie. Il soggetto della foto appartiene alla sottospecie Rupornis magnirostris saturatus, diffusa nella parte meridionale dell'areale, ed ha parti superiori marroni, testa marrone, cera gialla e petto, ventre e coda barrati. Il suo nome comune in inglese è Roadside Hawk per indicare la sua preferenza per i margini delle foreste in molti ambienti diversi, come foreste tropicali di pianura, foreste decidue e deserti. Questa poiana è altamente opportunista e si nutre di una grande varietà di piccole prede come rettili, piccoli mammiferi e anche piccoli pesci, ma la maggior parte della sua dieta è costituita da insetti (soprattutto ortotteri).
