La chiesa dell'Incoronata in Sabbioneta, nel nome e nella tipologia architettonica, richiama la chiesa dell'Incoronata di Lodi, edificata tra il 1488 ed il 1493. La chiesa di Sabbioneta doveva fungere da cappella palatina e da pantheon per la Dinastia, e per tale ragione venne affidata alla cura dei frati Serviti, presenti a Sabbioneta dal 1448. Essa sorge su due preesistenti edifici di culto, il più antico dedicato a S. Biagio, il più recente intitolato a S. Nicola, la cui memoria liturgica coincideva con il giorno del compleanno del Duca, il 6 dicembre. La chiesa, edificata un secolo dopo il suo prototipo laudense, dal 1586 al 1588, spicca nel contesto urbano sabbionetano per la sua mole singolare, imponente, ed austera. Il pezzo forte della chiesa è la tomba-mausoleo del Duca Vespasiano. In questo monumento superbo è tornato a riposare il suo corpo dopo 30 anni di “esilio” per motivi di studio, privo, tuttavia del monile del Toson d'Oro, la Massima Onorificenza che Imperatori e Re di Casa d'Asburgo concedevano a personaggi che volevano onorare, con il vincolo che l'insegna venisse restituita alla morte del cavaliere. Al Duca di Sabbioneta venne apposto sul cadavere nel momento della sepoltura, e quindi non restituito alla Casa Imperiale. Ora lo si può ammirare nella sala del tesoro.
