La centrale nucleare Enrico Fermi di Trino, in Piemonte, provincia di Vercelli, fu costruita tra il 1961 e il 1964 ed entrò in funzione nel 1965. Quando fu progettata e realizzata, nel resto del mondo erano state costruite solo una manciata di altre centrali nucleari. Nonostante la relativa inesperienza nella costruzione di centrali nucleari, e nonostante in Italia non ne fossero mai state fatte prima, il progetto della centrale di Trino è ancora considerato per molti versi un buon progetto. Il tipo di reattore che fu usato – ad acqua pressurizzata, o PWR – è oggi il più diffuso nei nuovi impianti, mentre i sistemi di sicurezza, come l'enorme guscio di acciaio che circonda tutto l'impianto, sono quelli che vengono ora considerati essenziali e che negli anni hanno permesso di evitare enormi disastri in altre centrali nucleari, come quella di Three Mile Island, negli Stati Uniti. La centrale di Trino, inoltre, funzionava bene e per alcuni anni ebbe il record per il più lungo utilizzo del reattore senza interruzioni. In Italia ci sono ancora quattro centrali nucleari. Sono ferme dal 1987, quando con un referendum fu deciso di chiuderle, ma ancora oggi in ognuna di esse lavorano decine di persone e sarà così ancora per molti anni. Le centrali nucleari italiane non producono più energia ma sono ancora posti potenzialmente pericolosi, dove si ha a che fare con rifiuti radioattivi prodotti in anni di attività, con le molte difficoltà di smaltirli e con la complessità di smantellare tutto quello che per un certo periodo era sembrato il futuro per la produzione di energia elettrica. Dalla sua chiusura, le vicende della centrale di Trino sono collegate con il cosiddetto decommissioning, vale a dire, il progetto per il suo smantellamento, che è ancora in corso e che dovrebbe completarsi nel 2030. Secondo i progetti, dove oggi c'è la centrale, sulla riva vercellese del Po, dovrebbe tornare a esserci un prato, 70 anni dopo la sua costruzione. I lavori per arrivare a quel punto sono in corso da tanti anni e prevedono fasi successive di smantellamento delle strutture e dei rifiuti radioattivi a bassa pericolosità, la cui produzione è in parte collegata alle operazioni di smantellamento stesse (i materiali che sono entrati a contatto con elementi radioattivi, per esempio, non possono essere smaltiti come rifiuti comuni, per quanto siano oggi molto poco pericolosi). Occasionalmente, la centrale è visitabile: infatti, dal 2015 Sogin, la società pubblica che ne è proprietaria, organizza ciclicamente visite guidate per far conoscere la sua storia e quella del nucleare in Italia.
