Per accedere al monastero di san Martino in Valle si attraversa una spettacolare gola con pareti di roccia a strapiombo e che nel punto più stretto sono larghe non più di un paio di metri. Narra la leggenda che ad aprire il varco fu San Martino in persona che colpì con i gomiti la roccia della montagna che il diavolo aveva piazzato all'imbocco della valle per impedire ai fedeli di raggiungere il monastero. Nulla dice la leggenda riguardo le pesanti multe erogate al santo dai Pretoriani Forestali per l'apertura abusiva della strada.
