Il rosso è sempre stato valorizzato dall'uomo in quanto spiccava rispetto al mondo circostante ed i pigmenti per ricavarlo sono stati trovati subito. Già nel Neolitico si estrapolava dalla robbia, erba dalle radici tintorie, da alcuni metalli e dall'ocra rossa. Nella Roma imperiale la cosiddetta “porpora romana” si ricavava dalla murice, conchiglia rara e per questo riservata solo all'imperatore ed ai suoi condottieri. Nel Medioevo, dal momento che le colonie delle murici sulle coste della Palestina e dell'Egitto erano in via di estinzione si dovette ripiegare sul chermes, estratto dall'insetto cocciniglia essiccato e schiacciato. Anche se la “chimica del colore rosso” cominciò presto non significa che la raccolta dei materiali e la fabbricazione non fosse laboriosa e costosa ma ne valeva la pena perché il risultato era un colore splendido e resistente. Nel Medioevo le differenze di rosso erano date dalla materia da cui si ricavava e questo influiva anche sul prezzo e sulla luminosità. La gente più povera portava una colorazione meno splendente mentre la più ricca indossava abiti di un rosso più acceso. A partire dal XIII secolo il papa ed i cardinali iniziarono a portare il rosso. Nello stesso periodo però sui quadri si dipingevano diavoli rossi e nei romanzi i cavalieri demoniaci erano rossi. Questa ambiguità venne accettata senza problemi. I riformisti protestanti consideravano il rosso immorale e sinonimo della perversa Roma, di conseguenza per loro era indispensabile che ogni buon cristiano bandisse il colore rosso. A partire dal XVI secolo gli uomini non si vestirono più di rosso, eccetto i cardinali e alcuni ordini cavallereschi. Negli ambienti cattolici le donne potevano indossare il rosso mentre il blu diventò un colore maschile, perché più discreto e si invertirono così le abitudini medievali. Infatti nel Medioevo, da dopo il XII secolo, le donne vestivano di azzurro, come la Vergine e gli uomini di rosso, segno di potere e di guerra. Un'altra ambivalenza fu l'usanza, fino al XIX secolo, del vestito da sposa rosso come simbolo dell'amore “divino” e nel contempo l'obbligo da parte delle prostitute di portare un copricapo rosso, come simbolo dell'amore carnale, che le rendeva facilmente identificabili in strada. Non va dimenticata l'usanza di porre delle lanterne rosse sulla porta dei bordelli, da cui la denominazione di “quartiere a luci rosse”. Il rosso diventò anche il colore della toga dei giudici e dei guanti e del cappuccio del boia. Il rosso ha sempre rappresentato il colore della guerra e fino al XIX secolo molte uniformi militari erano rosse. Nell'Antica Cina era il colore sacro della dinastia Chou (1050-256 a.C.) ed allora come in epoche successive fu il colore simbolo di felicità e di vitalità. Oggi in Cina è un colore portafortuna e nell'ambito del significato dei colori il rosso viene associato alla gioia e alla ricchezza. da "Giornale di Psicologia"
