Le orchidee che conosciamo appartengono al genere Phalaenopsis Blume, 1825: sono circa cinquanta specie originarie dell'Asia e degli arcipelaghi dell'Oceano Pacifico e dell'Oceano Indiano. Il nome Phalaenopsis deriva dal greco e significa simile alle farfalle. Le orchidee sono piante epifite cioè piante che crescono sulla corteccia degli alberi. Hanno foglie carnose e grandi e fiori multicolori, anche di diametro maggiore di 10 cm. I fiori sono spesso duraturi sia sulla pianta che recisi. Le radici sono visibili e molto delicate; da verdi diventano biancastre per la formazione dello strato protettivo detto velamen che le riveste. Le radici svolgono una funzione fotosintetica. Le orchidee si sviluppano su un solo fusto (monopodiali) e hanno un rizoma semplice dal quale nascono foglie grandi e opposte e simmetriche, di forma ovale, di solito di colore verde scuro. I fiori sono di colori differenti da specie a specie e solitamente sono grandi e molto belli: si sviluppano sugli steli che nascono dal fusto e crescono orientati verso la luce. Gli steli sono lunghi circa 15 cm e hanno ciascuno fino a dieci fiori.
