Nel 1966 a Salisburgo Gertiard Strasser e Pauli Schwarz soprannominato "Hexenmeister" (lo stregone) aprirono la Divisione Motorsport Volkswagen Porsche Austria dove poter elaborare alcuni modelli di automobili costruite da queste due case costruttrici preparandole per le competizioni. Partendo da un Maggiolino modello 1303 (ma anche 1302 dove codeste sigle non indicano la cilindrata e che per noi Italiani sono i Maggioloni) venne preparato il modello visibile in fotografia dove il motore boxer a 4 cilindri raffreddato ad aria venne aumentato di cilindrata passando dagli originali 1584 cm3 a 1599 cm3. Ma fu la notevole elaborazione di codesto che fece passare la potenza dagli originali 50 cavalli a 125 (da 120 a 128 in altri modelli). Fra le varie modifiche che si possono menzionare vi sono l'adozione dei carburatori della Porsche 912 (e della 904 in altri modelli)... il montaggio del radiatore dell'olio della Porsche 903 ed una coppa dell'olio di raffreddamento del motore maggiorata dai 2,5 litri originali a 7. In tempi passati i Maggiolini hanno spesso gareggiato in molte importanti competizioni risultando pure vittoriosi. Fra i tanti primi posti conquistati si possono ricordare il 1° posto al Rally di Svezia del 1956, il 1° posto all'East African Coronation Safari (in seguito Safari Rally) nel biennio 1953-54 e nel 1962 ed i primi 8 posti consecutivi al Giro di Australia del 1958. Il Maggiolino fu costruito dalla Volkswagen dal 1938 al 2003 in diverse versioni e varianti. Il termine Kafer contenuto nel titolo significa Scarafaggio mentre noi in Italia chiamiamo questa vettura Maggiolino (che in tedesco è Maikafer) per la sua forma arrotondata.
