I pipistrelli della specie Lonchophylla robusta (Orange Nectar Bat) della Costa Rica appartengono alla sottofamiglia Glossofagini (famiglia Fillostomidi), pipistrelli nettarivori specializzati da cui dipende l'impollinazione di centinaia di piante tropicali del continente americano. Questi pipistrelli utilizzano un meccanismo di alimentazione unico, mai osservato in nessun altro animale, che permette loro contro gravità di aspirare il nettare usando un meccanismo di pompaggio. La fisiologia orale è resa possibile dalla particolare anatomia della lunga lingua che ha due scanalature dotate di piccoli muscoli che spingono il nettare verso la bocca. In questo meccanismo agiscono quindi contemporaneamente due forze, l'azione capillare e la forza muscolare. Costa Rica, Giugno 2019.
