Palazzo delle Logge domina il lato più elevato di piazza Grande, innestando una grandiosa cornice rinascimentale nel cuore della città medioevale. Progettato da Giorgio Vasari nel 1573, l'edificio modificò drasticamente l'assetto urbanistico della piazza, già alterato dalla rovina del palazzo del Comune e del palazzo del Popolo: la sua realizzazione richiese infatti il ridimensionamento dell'antica platea communis e l'occupazione di un intero lato con una cortina ininterrotta. L'operazione raggiunse comunque un risultato di grande equilibrio, grazie alla semplicità delle linee architettoniche e alla luminosità del lungo porticato sotto il quale si aprono gli ingressi delle antiche botteghe con le caratteristiche spallette. Al centro del loggiato, una breve scalinata mette in comunicazione con la soprastante piazza del Praticino. Da sotto il portico si ammira la successione delle volte a crocera e degli ingressi dei negozi con le tipiche spallette per l' esposizione dei prodotti.
