"Se vuoi sapere cosa succede, segui lo sciacallo." E' quello che il mio amico sudafricano Jaco ripete sempre. Ha ragione. Questo animale intelligente, opportunista, ma anche abile cacciatore in proprio di piccole prede, è sempre dove bisogna essere. Lo si trova dove si è appena conclusa una caccia o dove si sta ancora svolgendo. Se ne sta in disparte, sornione, quasi fingesse di essere lì per caso, in attesa del suo momento. Il richiamo dello sciacallo che, soprattutto all'imbrunire o la notte, si ripete e si moltiplica da tutte le direzioni è una delle "voci" più caratteristiche e suggestive dell'Africa. Qui siamo nel Kgalagadi, tra Sudafrica e Botswana, in un periodo di estrema siccità in cui il manto di questo sciacallo dalla gualdrappa o dal dorso argentato si confonde con il giallo della vegetazione.
