Origine del Presepio: Sono gli evangelisti Luca e Matteo i primi a descrivere la Natività. Luca parla soltanto dell' umile nascita di Gesù a Betlemme. Di Re Magi venuti ad adorare il Redentore, ne parla Matteo. L'origine esatta del Presepio è difficile da definire, ma già nel secondo secolo troviamo nelle catacombe romane di Priscilla, lungo la via Salaria a Roma, scene della nascita di Gesù. Nel Quarto secolo, Papa Liberio I (352-366), fece erigere nel giorno di Natale, nella odierna Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore , una "tettoia" sorretta da tronchi d'albero davanti all'altare dove il 24 dicembre di ogni anno, veniva celebrata la Messa di mezzanotte. Il suo predecessore, Papa Giulio I (337-352) aveva stabilito che il 25 dicembre fosse festeggiato come il giorno della nascita di Gesù. Si dice che il primo presepe venne realizzato a Napoli nel 1025 presso una chiesa chiamata Santa Maria ad Praesepe che sorgeva in piazza San Domenico Maggiore nella quale furono esposte per la prima volta alcune statue lignee che raffiguravano la natività del Cristo. Il primo presepe vivente, fu realizzato per volere di Francesco D'Assisi che volle far rivivere in uno scenario naturale la nascita di Betlemme, con personaggi reali, pastori, contadini, frati e nobili tutti coinvolti nella rievocazione che ebbe luogo a Greccio, piccolo centro del Lazio, in provincia di Rieti, ai confini con l' Umbria, nella notte di Natale del 1223. Questo episodio poi fu magistralmente dipinto da Giotto nell'affresco della Basilica Superiore di Assisi. Fu il primo presepio e Greccio viene oggi celebrato come luogo di nascita del presepe. Il più antico presepe inanimato è invece quello che Arnolfo di Cambio scolpì per Papa Onofrio IV nel legno nel 1283 e del quale oggi si conservano solo alcune statue nella chiesa di S. Maria Maggiore in Roma. Le statue, ad altezza naturale, rappresentano: la Madonna col Bambino sulle ginocchia, San Giuseppe, il bue e l'asinello; davanti alla Madonna c'è uno dei re Magi. Dal 1300 in poi la Natività è affidata all'estro figurativo degli artisti più famosi, da Giotto a Filippo Lippi, Piero della Francesca, il Perugino, Dürer, Rembrandt, Poussin, Zurbaran, Murillo, Correggio, Rubens, Ghirlandaio. Il 1400 è un secolo di stasi per il presepe, essendo esso prerogativa di grandi chiese che possedevano rappresentazioni stabili per l'intera durata dell'anno. Nel 1500 si assiste ad una ripresa di rappresentazioni in tutta Italia; ricordiamo il magnifico presepe, totalmente in terracotta, ancora oggi conservato presso il Duomo di Modena, opera di Antonio Begarell. Il presepe comincia ad espandersi anche nelle case di nobili in tutta Italia. Cominciano ad essere rappresentati anche animali quali pecore, capre, cani oltre al bue ed all'asino; Inoltre cominciano a vedersi i primi paesaggi più o meno complessi. La diffusione a livello popolare si realizzò pienamente nel 1800: ogni famiglia in occasione del Natale costruiva un presepe in casa riproducendo la Natività secondo la tradizione con statuine in gesso o terracotta, carta pesta e altri materiali per gli scenari, forniti dagli artigiani. In Puglia, specialmente a Lecce, fu introdotto un uso innovativo della cartapesta, policroma o trattata a fuoco, drappeggiata su uno scheletro di fil di ferro e stoppa. La diffusione a livello popolare si realizzò pienamente nel 1800: ogni famiglia in occasione del Natale costruiva un presepe in casa riproducendo la Natività secondo la tradizione con statuine in gesso o terracotta, carta pesta e altri materiali per gli scenari, forniti dagli artigiani. In Puglia, specialmente a Lecce, fu introdotto un uso innovativo della cartapesta, policroma o trattata a fuoco, drappeggiata su uno scheletro di fil di ferro e stoppa. Nel corso del Novecento poi, e soprattutto dopo la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, ci fu un indebolimento della tradizione del presepe, anche per il fiorire della tradizione dell'Albero di Natale. Oggi tuttavia in Italia il presepe è tornato a fiorire grazie all'impegno di enti religiosi e privati come: la Associazione Italiana Amici del Presepio; il Museo del Presepio di Brembo Dalmine di Bergamo; alcune mostre importanti (100 Presepi nelle Sale del Bramante di Roma e dell'Arena di Verona [ Fonte : EugubininelMondo.it
