Il salotto di Milano, Piazza dei Mercanti, nel Medioevo era ancora un prato. La piazza attuale che è meno della metà di quella originale - che comprendeva anche via dei Mercanti con il Collegio dei Giureconsulti – è circoscritta oggi alla Casa dei Panigarola, la Loggia degli Osii, Palazzo delle Scuole Palatine edificato al posto del preesistente delle “Scuole del Broletto” del XIV secolo con al centro l'imponente mole del Broletto Nuovo o palazzo della Ragione. La Piazza diventò presto il centro della vita cittadina milanese: commercio, giustizia, arbitrati. Sotto i porticati del Palazzo della Ragione si trovavano i banchi notarili per stipulare contratti, testamenti e donazioni; i mercanti per la vendita e lo scambio di merci, i banchieri con i loro scanni e tanti carretti per la vendita al dettaglio. Da una finestra del Palazzo della Ragione pendeva la grossa fune destinata ai condannati. Su uno dei lati della piazza c'era persino il carcere. Dal 1921 al centro di Piazza dei Mercanti, al posto della pietra dei falliti un masso appuntito sul quale erano condannati a sedere (senza mutande) gli imbroglioni e gli insolventi, è stato rimontato un pozzo del XVI secolo che era sull'altro lato, davanti al Palazzo dei Giureconsulti, fino al greve rifacimento, per non dire distruzione del 1878 – pare per far passare le carrozze - che vide la nascita di via dei Mercanti.
