L'ingresso del bianco castello da favola, circondato da un verde e lussureggiante parco,che si affaccia su mare blu battuto dal vento: questa romantica descrizione ben si adatta alla residenza fatta costruire tra il 1856 ed il 1860 dall'arciduca Massimiliano d'Asburgo per la sua amata giovane sposa. Così, come Massimiliano aveva trovato rifugio dalla furia del mare in quello che diventerà poi il piccolo e graziosissimo approdo marittimo del castello, egli cercò di realizzare nello stesso posto un nido d'amore al riparo dalle insidie della vita. Ma la smania di potere e il desiderio di fama di Carlotta del Belgio spinsero l'arciduca a partire per il Messico, di cui diventerà sì imperatore ma dove perderà, dopo poco, la vita, sognando il suo amato castello così lontano e abbandonato. Si dice che Carlotta, dopo la morte del suo amato, abbia perso la ragione. In questa vicenda trova fondamento la maledizione che graverebbe sul castello; si crede infatti che chi vi dimora perisca anzitempo di morte violenta. Pare che, nella storia, la maledizione si sia sempre fatalmente avverata... Oggi il castello ed il parco sono aperti ai visitatori, sempre molto numerosi. Mentre il castello attira principalmente i turisti, il parco è anche meta domenicale dei triestini che, passeggiando sui sentieri tra la lussureggiante vegetazione voluta da Massimiliano, trascorrono alcune ore all'aria aperta. All'interno del castello si possono visitare gli appartamenti privati, le stanze desinate agli ospiti, i vari saloni, la biblioteca-studio e la magnifica sala del trono, recentemente restaurata e riportata all'originario splendore.
