Atene condivide con molte altre città europee la tradizione del cambio della guardia ai monumenti che costituiscono il cuore delle capitali. Il cambio della guardia ad Atene però ha delle peculiarità che lo rendono unico. Il cambio della guardia in Piazza Syntagma si svolge ogni ora, proprio di fronte al monumento del Milite Ignoto. Il rituale è piuttosto lungo e complicato, la coreografia è molto marziale ma le divise degli Evzones, talmente sono particolari, sembrano disturbare un po' la solennità del momento. “Gonnellina”, zoccoletti rossi con il pon pon…verrebbe da sorridere, ma sono grandi, grossi e armati (l'altezza minima degli Evzones è 1,87 mt), forse è meglio non prenderli in giro! Gli Evzones, soldati di fanteria che ormai hanno solo ruoli cerimoniali, e la loro insolita divisa ha significati simbolici, pratici e molto profondi. La “gonnellina” si chiama Fustanella e le sue pieghe simboleggiano gli anni (400) dell'occupazione ottomana. Fa parte della divisa perché un simbolo di lotta e mascolinità, un po' come il kilt per gli scozzesi. Anche il cappello, chiamato Fario, richiama la dominazione turca: è rosso come il sangue versato e la nappa nera simboleggia lacrime e lutto per la schiavitù. Altro accessorio che non potrete fare a meno di notare sono le calzature: le babbucce, nonostante l'aspetto frivolo, sono calzature nate per reggere a tutto. Sono robuste e pesanti, e la suola chiodata rende più facile e più sicura la percorrenza dei sentieri di montagna (Gli Evzones erano fanteria di montagna, un po' come i nostri alpini). Beh, si, adesso l'uniforme forse sembra un po' meno insolita.
