Aglais urticae (Linné, 1758) – Famiglia: Nymphalidae Sottofamiglia: Nymphalinae - Apertura alare: Da 4,3 a 5,2 cm. - Distribuzione in Italia: Presente in tutte le regioni, isole comprese, ad eccezione della Sardegna. - Habitat: Prati, ampie radure e giardini, dal livello del mare sino a 3000 m. Periodo di volo: Polivoltina da metà maggio a metà luglio e in agosto. Gli adulti della seconda generazione svernano rimanendo in vita sino alla primavera successiva, per cui è possibile osservare esemplari in volo nelle giornate miti anche in pieno inverno. - Pianta alimentare dei bruchi: Urtica dioica ed altre del genere Urtica. - Dimorfismo sessuale: Maschio e femmina indistinguibili. - Specie simili: Nymphalis polychloros da cui si distingue in particolare per le dimensioni minori e per la colorazione del rovescio delle due ali simile, mentre in A. urticae vi è la presenza di una zona centrale giallastra sul rovescio dell'ala anteriore.
