Benvenuto Cellini è stato uno scultore, orafo, scrittore, argentiere e artista italiano, considerato uno dei più importanti artisti del Manierismo. Nasce a Firenze il 3 novembre 1500, e muore il 13 febbraio 1971 nella sua città natale, ed è sepolto alla SS. Annunziata. Una delle sue opere d'arte più famose è “Il Perseo con la testa di Medusa” La sua arte si sviluppa nel periodo del Manierismo e fu senz'altro uno dei grandi protagonisti del Rinascimento di Scuole fiorentina. Il Cellini fu un artista versatile, molto raffinato e dotato di grandi abilità virtuosistiche e anche di un certo gusto per il bizzarro, tutte caratteristiche tipiche dell'arte manierista di cui fu uno dei più originali interpreti. Il manierismo fu la tendenza che caratterizzò l'arte del Cinquecento, e a Firenze fu contraddistinta da una grandissima eleganza formale unita a diverse stravaganze che, di fatto, comportarono l'abbandono dell'equilibrio Rinascimentale: e per gli sviluppi del manierismo, l'apporto di Benvenuto Cellini fu di notevole importanza, perché da un lato seppe superare lo stretto michelangiolismo, ovvero l'aderenza ai modi di Michelangelo, che caratterizzava le opere dei suoi principali rivali, Baccio Bandinelli e Bartolomeo Ammannati, e dall'altro perché riuscì a mediare un equilibrato classicismo con il virtuosismo e la ricercatezza che contraddistinsero i suoi modi, ma che non arrivarono alle punte toccate da un artista come Giambologna, l'artista che portò l'estro manierista ai suoi risultati più estremi, tanto da essere considerato anticipatore della scultura barocca. Tra gli scultori manieristi, Benvenuto Cellini rimane di sicuro il più raffinato ed elegante: un'eleganza formale che quasi si scontra col suo carattere, arrogante, violento, irascibile. Il suo temperamento, incline al litigio e alla rissa, e la sua omosessualità che all'epoca rappresentava un reato punibile con condanne pesanti, furono per lui fonte di numerosi problemi, che tuttavia non gli impedirono di creare alcuni dei più grandi capolavori di tutta la storia dell'arte.
