Il servizio telefonico pubblico arriva nella capitale con la fine della 1° Guerra Mondiale e fu subito un appalto esclusivo del British Post Office che si mise all'opera per attrezzare la Nazione con questa nuova tecnologia. Per la cabina che doveva stare nelle strade della capitale nacquero un po di diatribe, così il Post Office decise d'indire un concorso a cui parteciparono solo 3, già selezionati, architetti famosi dell'epoca. In questi magnifici tre c'era Giles Gilbert Scott (reduce dalla costruzione della Cattedrale di Liverpool e della Battersea Power Station) che vinse nel 1926 con il modello Kiosk 2.
