Sono appena tornata da una gita di tre giorni a Firenze, e mi ha incantata l'interno di questa chiesa, di cui non avevo mai visitato l'interno. Eccola si tratta di Santa Maria Maggiore: Santa Maria Maggiore, è tra le più antiche chiese di Firenze. Citata nei documenti fin dal 931 ma esistente già nell'VIII secolo, fu inglobata all'interno delle mura medievali erette nel 1078. Nel 1179 assunse il titolo di collegiata e fu una delle dodici antiche priorie. Nella seconda metà del XIII secolo con il passaggio ai Cistercensi fu ricostruita in forme gotiche e le fu donato l'impianto a tre navate divise da arcate a sesto acuto su pilastri quadrangolari. Come si legge nelle “Notizie istoriche delle chiese fiorentine divise ne suoi quartieri” di Giuseppe Richa la facciata in pietra grezza risale al 1300 e fu fatta fare da Terrino dei Manovelli. E' ancora oggi visibile grazie ai lavori eseguiti nel 1912-1913 che rimossero una intonacatura di epoca successiva. Di età romanica è la torre campanaria, successivamente mozzata all'altezza della facciata, dove risuonava la campana della Cavolaja. Nel corso del XVII secolo furono apportate trasformazioni all'interno della chiesa per mano dell'architetto Gherardo Silvani, con l'inserimento di nuove decorazioni, stucchi, altari di marmo e una serie di modifiche alle cappelle laterali. Tali cappelle, espressione del mecenatismo delle famiglie Ribotti, Panciatichi, Orlandini, Carnesecchi e Beccuto, erano impreziosite secondo quanto riferito dalle fonti da pregevoli dipinti di Paolo Uccello, Agnolo Gaddi, Masaccio e Botticelli. In particolare la cappella dei Panciatichi conservava sull'altare una Pietà del Botticelli mentre quella dei Carnesecchi una tavola che Vasari affermava essere opera di Masaccio.
