Nel IV arrondissement, nei pressi della Senna, che, già dal 1357 è sede dell'amministrazione comunale di Parigi e dal 1977 ne ospita anche il sindaco. Molti furono, nel corso della storia, gli avvenimenti legati a questo luogo, come la proclamazione della Terza Repubblica Francese del 1870 o il discorso che il generale Charles De Gaulle rivolse ai parigini nel 1944, a sostegno della Liberazione di Parigi dall'invasore tedesco. La piazza in cui oggi si erge l'Hôtel de Ville era originariamente chiamata Place de Grève (oggi piazza dell'Hôtel de Ville), nota come il luogo in cui diversi criminali vennero ghigliottinati. Quando Étienne Marcel acquistò la vecchia casa della piazza, la Maison aux Piliers, fu possibile iniziare i lavori per la costruzione dell'Hôtel de Ville, che venne ultimato una prima volta nel 1357. Nei pressi del palazzo oggi, una statua raffigurante Étienne Marcel, considerato il padre della sede del municipio parigino. L' edificio originale ha subito diverse ricostruzioni, modifiche e ampliamenti. La prima riedificazione avvenne già nel 1533, con l'architetto italiano Domenico da Cortona, un'altra nel 1628 per volere di Luigi XIII, che volle dare al palazzo un aspetto decisamente elegante. E l'ultima del 1880. Architettonicamente, è un palazzo di straordinaria bellezza: lungo ogni facciata ci sono statue raffiguranti alcuni protagonisti della storia parigina come Eugène Delacroix, Jean Bernard, Léon Foucault e Voltaire. Anche l'interno dell'edificio è ricco di opere scultoree: è possibile ammirarne moltissime all'interno dello splendido salone delle feste, il cui soffitto si erge per 13 metri, e che è probabilmente l'ambiente più bello all'interno del palazzo. Il comune di Parigi ha adibito uno spazio dell'Hôtel de Ville per le esposizioni, generalmente di fotografia e ad ingresso gratuito. L'ingresso a questa area è da rue de Rivoli.
