IL CAFFE' TOMMASEO A TRIESTE l Caffè Tommaseo è la più antica caffetteria ancora in funzione nella città Trieste. Aperto nel 1830, il caffè fu uno dei centri del movimento irredentista triestino e ancora oggi è un luogo di ritrovo per commercianti, artisti e intellettuali triestini. La caffetteria si trova in piazza Niccolò Tommaseo sul lungomare, nel cosiddetto: “ Borgo Teresiano”. All'apertura prese il nome dal proprietario, il padovano Tommaso Marcato, venne successivamente ribattezzato: Tommaseo, in onore del linguista scrittore e patriota dalmata. Marcato fece arrivare dal Belgio preziose specchiere e portò a Trieste il gelato e dal 1845 l'illuminazione a gas. Tra i frequentatori Pasquale Besenghi degli Ughi, Domenico Rossetti, Pietro Kandler e probabilmente Henry Beyle (Stendhal); in tempi più recenti Virgilio Giotti, Giani Stuparich, Pierantonio Quarantotti Gambini, Umberto Saba. Italo Svevo, spesso veniva a sedersi ai tavoli del Tommaseo per scrivere. E il triestino, Claudio Magris, ha scritto in questo caffè il suo capolavoro: Danubio. Qui si concludevano, inoltre, anche numerosi affari commerciali e di import export. I caffè storici, infatti, erano sede di recapiti per tante categorie commerciali. Nel 1954 il caffè Tommaseo, che si trova nell'omonima piazza adiacente a Piazza Unità, è stato insignito dell'onorificenza di locale storico d'Italia. Oggi il locale, restaurato e rinnovato, ha riaperto con una nuova gestione aggiungendo al tradizionale caffè il marchio dell'Enoteca Bischoff, altro storico locale del centro e famosa enoteca fin dal 1777 che assicura l'altissimo livello della scelta enologica e la continuità dello storico caffè.
