Ma tale sistemazione non è perfetta: il nostro calendario divide un anno in 365 giorni, cioè circa un quarto di giro in meno di quanti la Terra ne compia su se stessa durante una rivoluzione completa attorno al Sole. La rivoluzione però dura 365 giorni, 5 ore, 48 minuti e 49 secondi. La soluzione sono gli anni bisestili. Tutti sanno che ogni 4 anni, aggiungiamo un giorno, il 29 febbraio. Ma quel giorno non basta per riallinearsi completamente. La regola è più complessa, ed è come segue: • ogni 4 anni bisogna aggiungere un giorno - sono appunto gli anni bisestili; • ma ogni 100 anni bisogna togliere un giorno: quindi il 2100 non sarà bisestile; • in più ogni 400 bisogna riaggiungere un giorno: ecco perché il 2000 è stato bisestile Detto in altro modo, sono bisestili: • gli anni non secolari il cui numero è divisibile per 4; • gli anni secolari il cui numero è divisibile per 400. Il ritardo accumulato ogni anno fa sì che il momento degli equinozi (anche quello di primavera) siano in un orario e un giorno diverso rispetto al precedente.
