Passeggiando per Unter den Linden non si può non notare l'università Humboldt e le masse di giovani studenti che popolano il quartiere. Questa è la più antica università di Berlino (1766), ospitata in quello che un tempo era il palazzo reale. Illustri personalità si sono sedute ai banchi e alle cattedre del prestigioso istituto: tra queste il padre della dialettica Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Karl Marx e Friedrich Engels, che diede vita al materialismo dialettico ribaltando l'idealismo hegeliano. Oltre a loro, Albert Einstein, Max Planck e i Fratelli Grimm. L'edificio, completato nel 1766, faceva parte dell'ambizioso progetto del Forum Fridericianum e fu destinato inizialmente al principe Enrico, fratellastro di Federico il Grande (Federico II di Prussia, che regnò dal 1740 al 1786).
