La Colonna fu innalzata durante gli anni dell'impero di Guglielmo I, precisamente nel 1873, a opera di Heinrich Strack (che pare si sia ispirato alla torre faro del cimitero di Brescia di Rodolfo Vantini), mentre la statua d'oro che vi sta in cima chiamata Goldelse (Elsa d'oro) fu un'aggiunta di poco successiva realizzata da Friedrich Drake. Entrambe celebrano delle vittorie di guerra ottenute dalla Prussia contro Francia, Austria e Danimarca tra il 1864 e 1871 e che portarono all'unificazione e all'indipendenza della Germania. Il monumento è alto 67 metri circa per un totale di 237 gradini. Due metri in più rispetto al monumento originale furono aggiunti dai nazisti quando, spostandolo, si resero conto che la vista sulla porta di Brandeburgo e viceversa non era proprio ottimale. Ciò su cui è interessante riflettere è che questa Colonna, nata per ragioni patriottiche-militari, a causa della storia recente di Berlino, sia ormai percepito dai berlinesi come un simbolo di libertà, tanto da essere il nome della più importante rivista gay cittadina (per l'appunto Siegessäule) e ogni anno maggiore punto di ritrovo della Cristoph Street Parade.
