La pesca è stata per secoli un'attività molto rischiosa, con un'elevata possibilità di non fare ritorno a casa, come sanno bene i vecchi pescatori di Ischia Ponte, depositari di racconti terribili con scialuppe salpate a remi alla volta di Sicilia e Sardegna e mai più tornate indietro. Di contro, proprio il mare con le sue insidie ha contribuito a cementare forti legami di solidarietà tra i pescatori del villaggio: relazioni oggi scalfite dagli enormi progressi tecnologici, ma non del tutto scomparse. Questo perché la pesca ischitana non si è evoluta in un'industria con grossi equipaggi e sofisticate apparecchiature di supporto, come invece è accaduto per la vicina Procida che vanta una flotta di pescherecci tra le più importanti del Mediterraneo. Merito dell'alternanza di fondali sabbiosi e fondali rocciosi, nonché della particolare collocazione dell'isola d'Ischia nel bacino del Mediterraneo. Di fatto, Ischia rappresenta il confine naturale sia delle specie che abitano il Mediterraneo meridionale (confine settentrionale), che delle specie che preferiscono le acque leggermente più fredde del Mediterraneo settentrionale (confine meridionale).
