Maestoso, imponente, primo baluardo della sirena Parthenope per chi approda sulle sue coste: è così che si presenta Castel Nuovo, fortezza angioina voluta da Carlo I d'Angiò e costruita a partire dal 1279. Il monarca francese volle fortemente l'erezione di quest'edificio per ovviare alla mancanza di un vero e proprio castello che facesse da guardia alla città, difatti Castel dell'Ovo (I secolo a.C) risultava una struttura vecchia ed inadeguata mentre il più recente Castel Capuano (1160) non godeva di una felice posizione strategica. Il progetto e la costruzione del maniero furono diretti dall'architetto Pierre de Chaule che portò a compimento l'opera in soli 5 anni, creando non solo una fortezza ma anche una nuova dimora per i regnanti. Tutti sappiamo che, tra i maggiori simboli di Napoli, questo castello è conosciuto anche come Maschio angioino, termine medievale derivante dal fiorentino “mastio” che indicava, in una struttura con più torri, la maggiore e la più sicura in caso di attacchi bellici. Tuttavia il suo nome esatto è Castel Nuovo, in francese Chastiau nuef. È quasi impossibile risalire alle originali fattezze medievali dello Chastiau nuef, ormai diventato una stratifigrazione di elementi architettonici, sopravvive però la bella Cappella palatina , di chiara marca angioina, risalente al 1307. Inglobata nel cuore del castello, l'entrata avviene dal cortile del castello tramite un portale rinascimentale in marmo sormontato da un rosone vetrato, mentre la parete di fondo affaccia sulla odierna via Marina. Restaurata in gran parte già nel XV secolo per alcuni danni subiti a causa del terremoto del 1456, all'interno la cappella presenta una tipica struttura medievale con strette finestre gotiche che illuminano la sala e quel che resta dei suoi splendidi capolavori: uno splendido ciclo di affreschi, infatti, abbelliva la struttura. Assieme a pitture ancora visibili attribuite all'artista fiorentino Maso di Banco, documenti ci attestano la presenza e la mano di Giotto che intorno al 1330, ospite della corte di Roberto d'Angiò, dipinse storie del Vecchio e Nuovo Testamento. Il ciclo del maestro e della sua bottega, rara testimonianza di affreschi di così alto valore artistico, fu purtroppo eliminato già nel XV secolo.
