Questa enorme porta era l'ingresso del tempio di Apollo, difatti guarda verso Delos, il luogo di nascita del Dio secondo la mitologia greca. Alcuni ipotizzano invece che il tempio fosse dedicato a Dioniso, sempre collegato all'isola di Naxos perché qui Dioniso trovò Arianna appena abbandonata da Teseo (il mitologico re ateniese che uccise il Minotauro nel labirinto di Creta, in cui riuscì ad orientarsi proprio grazie al filo dato da Arianna, la figlia del re cretese Minosse, che si era innamorata di Teseo) e la fece sua sposa. Il tempio sembra comunque sia stato iniziato nel 530 a.C. dal tiranno Lygdamis, che aveva progetti abbastanza imponenti per magnificare il potere della sua isola. Lygdamis venne però sconfitto dagli spartani quando il tempio non era ancora finito, pare fossero state costruite solo le mura esterne e la porta, e l'opera rimase incompiuta.
