La Giostra del Saracino (“Giostra ad burattum”) è un antico giuoco cavalleresco che, come esercizio di addestramento militare, affonda le sue radici nel Medio Evo e richiama la secolare lotta sostenuta dalla cristianità occidentale per contenere l'avanzata musulmana. Disputato sovente ad Arezzo fra il Cinquecento e la fine del Seicento (quando si organizzarono memorabili giostre barocche), il torneo svolge per tutta l'Età Moderna importanti funzioni sociali in seno alla comunità urbana. Si giostra infatti sia in occasione della visita di grandi personalità (regnanti, principi), sia per solennizzare particolari ricorrenze civili (carnevale, matrimoni). La Giostra - che dall'inizio del Seicento è una peculiarità aretina - decade nel corso del XVIII secolo fino a scomparire del tutto, almeno nella sua versione più “nobile”. Dopo una vivace ripresa popolaresca fra Sette ed Ottocento, una nuova scomparsa dopo il 1810 ed una fugace apparizione nel 1904 sulla scia della rivalutazione del Medio Evo operata dal movimento romantico, la Giostra viene stabilmente ripristinata nel 1931, in forma di rievocazione storica ambientata nel XIV secolo, assumendo rapidamente anche un autentico carattere agonistico. La manifestazione, che giunge quest'anno alla 111.ma e 112.ma edizione dell'epoca contemporanea, si svolge ogni anno ad Arezzo il penultimo sabato di giugno in notturna (Giostra di San Donato, patrono della città) e la prima domenica di settembre nel pomeriggio (Giostra di Settembre). Ne sono protagonisti i quattro antichi quartieri della città: Porta Crucifera (colori verde e rosso), Porta del Foro (colori giallo e cremisi), Porta Sant'Andrea (colori bianco e verde) e Porta del Borgo, oggi Porta Santo Spirito (colori giallo e azzurro). Sabato 22 giugno si giostrerà un notturna e questa immagine si svolge il sabato mattina, quando i figuranti sfilano per il centro storico e l'araldo legge il bando.
