Falena diurna appartenente alla famiglia Zygaenidae, comune in tutta Europa la Zygaena purpuralis è una falena di medie dimensioni con un' apertura alare che raggiunge 30 – 34 (mm 1,2 – 1,3). Le ali anteriori di solito mostrano tre striature longitudinali rosse abbastanza variabili, con bordi grigio-bluastro quasi trasparenti. Testa e torace sono neri, mentre l'addome è blu scuro. Lepidotteri adulti sono rinvenibili da fine maggio fino ad agosto, a seconda della posizione. Volano durante il giorno, soprattutto con clima caldo e soleggiato, si alimenta con nettare di fiori diversi. Le larva sono di colore giallo, con alcune linee di piccole macchie nere. La larva si nutre di timo serpillo (Thymus polytrichus, Thymus serpyllum, ecc.). Si presentano da agosto a maggio e svernano in una volta o due volte.
