In collaborazione con l'amico e collega Bobore Frau. Da circa due anni abbiamo iniziato un progetto personale di studio e documentazione del barbagianni di Sardegna (Tyto alba ernesti), abbiamo installato nidi artificiali corredati di microcamera interna a infrarossi e abbinata ad altri sistemi di videocamere esterne. Durante le numerose nottate trascorse davanti al monitor abbiamo avuto modo di osservare comportamenti diversi e affascinanti, talvolta difficilmente spiegabili. In questo caso volevamo realizzare un'immagine in grado di raccontare la controversa convivenza tra barbagianni e gechi (Tarentola mauritanica) nei casolari abbandonati in aperta campagna. Sebbene lo strigiforme sia perfettamente in grado di catturare il piccolo rettile, in un solo caso abbiamo avuto prova della predazione. In numerose occasioni ci siamo ritrovati col fiato sospeso osservando le due specie all'interno del casolare, a volte a poche decine di cm di distanza, quasi incuranti l'una dell'altra. Con questa fotografia volevamo trasmettere questo senso di tensione e inquietudine: l'ingresso del predatore alato a poca distanza dal piccolo geco, che non può fare altro se non confidare nella sua immobilità e nel suo peculiare mimetismo per non attirare le attenzioni. Per realizzare la fotografia ci siamo serviti della doppia esposizione in camera. Un primo scatto è stato dedicato al rettile su uno degli infissi fatiscenti, mentre il secondo al barbagianni in ingresso al casolare, collegando la reflex a una fotocellula autocostruita. Per quanto riguarda l'illuminazione ci siamo serviti di un flash anulare per il geco e di un flash esterno molto laterale per il barbagianni. La foto è stata possibile solo grazie a uno studio meticoloso dei punti di passaggio del barbagianni e degli orari di attività
