Ad Alassio in provincia di Savona percorrendo Corso Dante Alighieri vi imbatterete in un muretto che porta le firme dei grandi nomi della storia dell'arte, della moda e dello sport. La storia di questo monumento spontaneo è strettamente collegata al vicino caffè Roma e alla famiglia Berrino, proprietaria del bar dal 1945. Già agli inizi del novecento, Alassio era la meta turistica preferita delle classi abbienti inglesi, cosa che contribuì non poco allo sviluppo economico del paese ligure. Alla fine degli anni '40 l'alta borghesia inglese lasciò il posto a un turismo di stampo diverso e Alassio diventò il punto d'incontro preferito di letterati e artisti cosmopoliti, tra cui lo scrittore Ernest Hemingway. Il fulcro di questi incontri fu proprio lo storico caffè Roma di fronte al quale oggi sorge il muretto monumentale. La storia di questa installazione d'arte permanente è estremamente semplice: Mario Berrino (allora proprietario del caffè Roma) detestava lo spoglio muretto di fronte al suo bar e dopo otto anni di sopportazione nel '53 propose ad Ernest Hemingway, suo affezionatissimo cliente, di trasformalo in qualcosa di più spettacolare e piacevole allo sguardo. L'idea era quella di applicare al muretto delle targhe colorate firmate dalle persone di spicco che passavano per il bar e proprio lo scrittore inglese fu tra i primi tre ad arricchire il muretto assieme ai membri del Quartetto Cetra e al musicista jazz Cosimo Di Ceglie. Nonostante il progetto non fosse stato in alcun modo approvato dal Comune, la comunità locale intuendo l'importanza dell'operazione di Berrino e Hemingway, si guardò bene dal protestare. Da lì il muretto di Alassio è in continua espansione e nel corso dei decenni si è arricchito di moltissime altre firme fino a diventare un coloratissimo mosaico firmato da nomi illustri: tra gli italiani si va dal maestro del cinema Vittorio De Sica al campione Valentino Rossi passando per la nazionale italiana che vinse il mondiale dell'82, tra gli artisti e letterati stranieri oltre al nome di Hemingway spiccano Anita Ekberg, Louis Armstrong, e Jean Cocteau. Se siete ad Alassio non potete assolutamente perdere l'occasione di vedere questo meraviglioso quanto spontaneo pezzo di storia e, perché no, provare l'emozione di fermarvi a prendere un caffè seduti al tavolo una volta occupato da Ernest Hemingway.
