#StorieDiPiume -Nome Scientifico: Saxicola torquatus Ordine: Passeriformes - Famiglia: Muscicapidae Il Saltimpalo predilige ambienti aperti e semi-aperti con vegetazione rada, come brughiere, praterie, campi incolti. Il suo habitat ideale è punteggiato di pietre e da recinzioni, muretti, siepi, arbusti o cespugli: tutti possibili posatoi sui quali gli individui si appostano durante la caccia. Il Saxicola torquatus abita prevalentemente ad altitudini medie o medio-basse. In Italia si concentra soprattutto nelle regioni settentrionali – Lombardia, Veneto, Liguria, Piemonte e Valle d'Aosta – con popolazioni anche in Toscana, Campania e Sicilia. In generale ha una diffusione piuttosto omogenea su tutto l'areale, fatta eccezione per le elevate altitudini dell'arco alpino alle quali, di solito, evita di spingersi. Simile nell'aspetto allo Stiaccino, si differenzia da quest'ultimo per l'assenza del sopracciglio, una coda leggermente più lunga e un corpo più compatto. Il Saltimpalo raggiunge i 12-13 cm di lunghezza, 13 grammi di peso e 20-22 cm di apertura alare. Il maschio ha il capo prevalentemente nero, interrotto da un collare di tonalità biancastra. Il petto è tendente al castano con una macchia arancione al centro, mentre la gola è nera. Le ali sono marroni con una macchia bianca visibile anche quando l'individuo è in volo. La femmina presenta un piumaggio più sbiadito rispetto a quello del maschio e un sopracciglio bianco sporco appena accennato. Gli individui più giovani si caratterizzano per la tonalità bruna e da striature nere sulle parti superiori, mentre quelle inferiori sono grigio-bianche. Il Saltimpalo si nutre di insetti, ragni e vermi catturati spesso sul terreno. Il periodo della riproduzione va da marzo ad agosto e la femmina depone in media due-tre covate. L'area di nidificazione è solitamente a livello del mare o raggiunge al massimo i 600 metri di altitudine. Il nido viene costruito in cavità del terreno utilizzando fili di erba, paglia, licheni e radici. La femmina depone 4-5 uova alla volta e nutre i pulcini con invertebrati e insetti.
