I monaci in Myanmar indossano abiti di un bellissimo rosso scuro simile al colore dei pistilli dello zafferano, le monache vestono di rosa e, a volte, di giallo: i colori dell'alba. Le monache già da piccole vengono rasate perché i capelli sono un dono della natura che le può rendere attraenti. I monaci birmani sono circa mezzo milione, le monache circa 75.000 in un paese che conta poco più di 53 milioni di abitanti. I monasteri e i monaci hanno un ruolo determinante per quanto riguarda l'istruzione: 1190 scuole monastiche accolgono oltre 100.000 bambini e ragazzi orfani o appartenenti a famiglie bisognose. La loro sussistenza è interamente affidata ai laici, non possono possedere nulla al di là di tre tonache, una ciotola per l'elemosina, una tazza per il cibo e altri piccoli oggetti per la pulizia. Anche i monasteri già dall'antichità sono sempre stati costruiti con le offerte degli stessi abitanti del paese.
