Bruno, Giordano. - Filosofo (Nola 1548 - Roma 1600). Filippo della famiglia dei Bruni, assunse il nome di Giordano entrando a 17 anni nel convento di S. Domenico a Napoli. Sospettato di eresia, riparò a Roma (1576), di qui, deposto l'abito ecclesiastico, andò peregrinando di città in città; fu a Ginevra (1579), dove per alcuni mesi abbracciò il calvinismo, a Tolosa, a Parigi (dove pubblicò nel 1582 il De umbris idearum e la commedia il Candelaio), in Inghilterra (1583-1585), dove per alcuni mesi insegnò a Oxford e pubblicò a Londra, con il finto luogo di Parigi e di Venezia, Cena de le ceneri, De la causa principio et uno, De l'infinito universo et mondi, Spaccio de la bestia trionfante (1584), De gli eroici furori (1585). Dopo un breve soggiorno a Parigi, passò nell'agosto del 1586 in Germania, e tra il 1590 e 1591 a Francoforte pubblicò i poemi latini De minimo, De monade, De immenso et innumerabilibus. Nel 1591 accogliendo l'invito di G. Mocenigo, si recò a Venezia dove, denunziato come eretico dal suo ospite, fu nel 1592 arrestato dall'Inquisizione e processato. Si dichiarò disposto a fare ammenda, ma, trasferito all'Inquisizione di Roma, e sottoposto a nuovo processo, rifiutò di ritrattarsi, onde fu come eretico condannato al rogo, che egli affrontò impavido a Roma in Campo de' Fiori.
