Palazzo Yusupov rappresenta la rara unione di monumento architettonico e "tempio dell' arte". Il più lussureggiante palazzo non-imperiale di San Pietroburgo fu la casa della ricca e poderosa famiglia dei Yusupov dal 1830 fino alla rivoluzione. Dopo la Rivoluzione d'Ottobre, il palazzo fu consegnato alle autorità educative, che fortunatamente optarono per conservare molti degli interni originali e usarono l'edificio come un tipo di club house per gli insegnanti della città. I Yusupov furono grandi collezioniste d'arte, e la loro collezione, che fu ben conosciuta anche fuori dalla Russia, venne per la maggior parte trasportata all'Hermitage.
