Situata a sud del Teatro Mariinsky, con le sue guglie barocche e le cupole dorate e' una delle chiese piu' amate di San Pietroburgo nonché l'unica attiva in epoca sovietica, quando la religione era proibita. La chiesa soprannominata "chiesa del Marinaio" perché San Nicola è patrono dei marinai, contiene numerose icone del XVIII secolo e una splendida iconostasi di legno intagliato. L'edificio fu costruito tra il 1753 e il 1762 su progetto dell'architetto russo Chevanskij, allievo di Rastrelli, al posto di una chiesa di legno, e può ospitare fino a cinquemila persone contemporaneamente. La torre campanaria, a quattro piani, è costituito da un edificio a se' che culmina con un'alta guglia aguzza. La Cattedrale di San Nicola è diventata un monumento alla gloria della marina sovietica. Ogni avvenimento importante, come il varo di una nuova nave o una missione, era qui accompagnato con una celebrazione. Oggi in questa cattedrale ortodossa si trovano monumenti commemorativi di alcuni avvenimenti tragici della storia recente della marina russa come quello eretto in onore dell'equipaggio del sommergibile “Komsomolets, nel 1989, e le lapidi commemorative dei marinai del sommergibile “Kursk” morti nel disastro del 2000.
