In Finlandia tra fine luglio e inizio agosto fa parecchio caldo (attorno ai 30 gradi, anche)... Le condizioni di luce tra gli alberi e la spettacolarità del Rally possono regalare attimi da incorniciare.

Grazie, mi fa molto piacere.
Diciamo che l'attrezzatura era quella lì (e già grazie, all'epoca... Peraltro era nuova  ) e con quel che avevo cercavo di imparare e sfruttare al meglio le situazioni che mi capitavano.
Con l'attrezzatura di oggi (FF di livello semipro e 200 f2.8) avrei portato a casa più scatti buoni da quello spot, non uno solo!! Però mi trovi d'accordo sul fatto che l'attrezzatura sia un fattore secondario, almeno in determinate condizioni di luce e di combinazione fra quest'ultima e le necessità di tempi veloci (leggi resa ad alti ISO, bassa per la D90, purtroppo).
Inoltre, questo scatto, uscito in jpg e non in raw purtroppo, ha subito qualche cura in PP.
Anche il peso, come dici giustamente, non è cosa da poco, ma sinceramente ti dico che al Montecarlo 2019 ho scattato dallo stesso spot con D810 e D90 e la differenza si vede parecchio.
Alla fine molto dipende anche da aspettative e gusti. Va anche detto che la mia APS-C in questione ha 10 anni... Ora con la D500 le cose son diverse (acquistata per il Monte di quest'anno), ma la differenza di peso si sente meno...
