Scatto eseguito in appoggio. L'Abbazia di Monte Oliveto Maggiore è uno splendido complesso monastico, nonché uno scrigno di tesori dell'arte, che si trova ad Asciano, nel cuore delle Crete Senesi. La storia dell'abbazia inizia a nel 1313 quando il nobile senese Giovanni de' Tolomei, insieme a Patrizio Patrizi e Ambrogio Piccolomini, decide di ritirarsi a vita monastica in uno sperduto possedimento della famiglia Tolomei, trentasei chilometri a sud di Siena, noto con il nome di Accona. Qui trascorrono anni di vita semi-ascetica fino a quando nel 1319, anche per non essere confusi con le varie sette eretiche di fraticelli che abbondavano nella penisola, furono riconosciuti come congregazione dal vescovo di Arezzo, Guido Tarlati Pietramala. La nuova Congregazione decise di appartenere all'Ordine dei Benedettini, seguendo la regola comunemente conosciuta come “ora et labora”. Ancor oggi una visita all'Abbazia è scandita dal susseguirsi della tipica vita monastica, con rigidi orari di apertura e chiusura, annunciati dall'inequivocabile suono di una campanella.
